Trumpism's most illuminating and defining instances – not its most significant, nor most brutal, nor most hazardous, nor stupidest, but perhaps its most illuminating – came earlier this autumn. He has committed acts 10,000 times as bad – the present calculation of casualties due to his slashing to USAID is 600,000 and increasing, and recently research predicted his fossil fuel policies would cause deaths 1.3 million more. Yet nothing as characteristic. No former leader would have dared – truly, no previous leader would have conceived – unilaterally destroying large sections of the White House to build a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the direct cooperation of numerous America's wealthiest, almost all of whom conduct transactions with public institutions.

As confusing as it is to observe the leader seek to颠覆 the established notion about democracy and exchange it with its complete opposite, there is one large group within America who wouldn't consider it totally unfamiliar. That encompasses people such as ourselves – within elder demographics a near majority – who were brought up within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have watched over the years as politically conservative religious groups transformed the Christ we were raised with into exactly the opposite of our perception of his character. Fundamentally, they transformed an image of love into an icon of hate who endorses specifically the brutality that he criticized in scripture; this change developed more slowly, over decades as opposed to months, yet it remains disconcerting via comparable methods, a disorienting gut punch for countless people.
A Harmful Christianity Takes Hold
Hence I shall explain the Jesus that I grew up with, since in theory Jesus is the center of any Christian faith, and since the fastest-growing cadre among Americans could have minimal awareness regarding him since they are atheists or agnostics or religiously unaffiliated. I take no issue with any of these traditions, nor with any other faith; yet I maintain that contain precious wisdom of significant worth in the Christian story.

The apparent and clear reality that the Jesus from scripture requests a form of extreme compassion focused on the poor is what has always made the Christian faith rather a provocative belief system: attractive to the masses, but due to its inherent radicalness needing to be restrained. In the fifties it was controlled through watering down – Protestantism was so widespread that it essentially blessed current circumstances.
A Battle for the Best of Us
Therefore I have felt encouraged to witness the persistent defiance against Trump emerge over the last twelve months. It has been substantial consolation to assist in constructing the campaign that has demonstrated publicly through repeated demonstrations, and appears to have motivated citizens to show up in significant amounts in interim political contests. We will need to maintain it, and with identical determination, displaying national flags throughout each rally and calls to the highest qualities in US history.
