The network's Leading New Show of This Year Secures a Substantial Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.
During the fall season, the late-night programming block welcomed back its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. However, shortly thereafter, the channel introduced a completely new animated series with a distinctly unique feel. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, evoking a animated take of a laid-back talk show. During a period often marked by bleakness, this show's earnestness resonated deeply and helped it become a breakout hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
On December 18th, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to develop the world of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four main characters.
"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and shared it with others," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for a little longer."
A President's Endorsement
Accompanying the news praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He shouted out the fans who found the show and supported its distinctly quirky sensibility.
"All of you got behind this new show, praised it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about following this charming family go about their everyday routines.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to evolve comedy past its prevailing sarcastic tone. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” explained Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we need to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
Future Seasons
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to catalyze that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal guarantees audiences a little more time to enjoy the gentle humor of the beloved Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The complete first season is ready to watch on HBO Max.
