When I walk into the room, Lamine Camara picks up a football he clings to until after the conversation. This serves as a powerful visual metaphor for a ambition he has always held onto. “I only wanted football; my mind was set on nothing else,” remarks the AS Monaco and Senegal midfielder.

His determination and raw talent convinced teams such as Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. Yet, the most difficult person to convince didn't come from a sporting director or manager, but his own father. “He was against me playing soccer but it’s because he hadn’t seen me play,” says Camara.

Overcoming Early Hurdles

In time, on “one beautiful day,” he received his father’s blessing to pursue his path in the sport. A further barrier was his small stature, which discouraged his hometown team Casa Sports from giving him a contract.

Nevertheless, Génération Foot – the institution that nurtured talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. Following Camara was named the MVP in a regional tournament, Génération Foot were “shocked” to discover he was without a contract. They moved fast. “I was taken directly to the training centre. They prevented me from returning to Casamance,” Camara said.

An Unforgettable Season and Continental Breakthrough

This move set him on a pathway to Europe. A defining period was 2023, “an unforgettable year,” which began with him lifting the African Nations Championship. Shortly after, though tired, he competed in the U-20 Africa Cup, guiding his country to victory and earning best player.

A month later, he signed for FC Metz, emulating Mané. “Adapting was never a problem,” states the 21-year-old. He resides by himself in Europe, a choice his family encourage to maintain his concentration.

Influences and Playing Style

Off-field noise aren't a problem for Camara, who draws inspiration from Kevin De Bruyne’s “modesty” and exceptional playing qualities. Additionally, he's a huge fan of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His powerful shot and accuracy from dead-ball situations are notable assets. Camara confesses a need to temper his aggression, after being shown red at the start of his tenures at both Metz and Monaco. “It's a trait I carry with me!” he quips.

Monaco, Mentors and Future Ambitions

With his current club, he cherishes learning from veterans such as Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard about the interest in Pogba, I told myself we are fortunate,” Camara noted.

Currently, attention is squarely on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the favourites – there's no denying it. After defeating England on their soil…,” he states, referencing a memorable 3-1 victory in Nottingham.

On a potential transfer to the English top flight, he is focused on Monaco for now. “I feel really at ease here,” he insists. However, he's often teased by icon El-Hadji Diouf about his two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. Camara jokes, yet remains determined about targeting the main top prize in the future.

“The pressure is on us – that's the reality. Having beaten England in their own country… it instills confidence.”

Looking ahead, this talented midfielder blends a modest start, steely determination, and grand ambitions targeting to guide Senegal to Afcon success and build his own lasting legacy in the game.
