The ice cream brand's Founding Partner States Parent Company Prevented Pro-Palestinian Frozen Dessert Flavor
The co-founders of the well-known frozen dessert company Ben & Jerry's has announced how parent company the multinational conglomerate prevented the launch of an innovative Palestine-themed frozen dessert product.
The entrepreneur, that established the company with Jerry Greenfield, announced how he plans to independently develop the controversial product as part of a personal collection showcasing causes Ben & Jerry's was prevented from addressing publicly.
Longstanding Dispute Between Founders and Parent Company
This latest development intensifies the ongoing tension among the internationally recognized dessert company with its corporate parent, the British packaged goods giant that acquired Ben & Jerry's since 2000.
Both founders have asserted that Unilever along with their ice cream division Magnum improperly prevented Ben & Jerry's from "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
The Fruit Flavor as a Symbol of Solidarity
Mr. Cohen revealed via social media that he's developing a new watermelon-flavored sorbet, requesting consumer ideas regarding naming options plus additional components.
“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” Mr. Cohen declared from a cooking set. “I'm creating a watermelon-flavored ice cream that calls for lasting ceasefire for Palestinians while demanding addressing the harm that was done there.”
The watermelon has emerged as an emblem of solidarity with the Palestinian people due to its colors, which mirror those of the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Historical Social Engagement and Recent Developments
Several years ago, the ice cream company ceased sales of its products in areas under Israeli control, resulting in Unilever transferring the Israeli operation to a local licensee, thus allowing ongoing distribution in the occupied West Bank.
The new dessert series is being developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the activist dessert company which originally established several years back to support ex- political contender Senator Sanders via the product "Bernie's Back".
Management Changes plus Future Plans
The founder indicated that he plans to develop other ice cream flavors that address concerns that the company was prevented from addressing publicly due to Unilever.
This development follows partner Mr. Greenfield resigned from Ben & Jerry's recently, following many years with the organization, mentioning worries that its independence was compromised after Unilever's decision to restrict their advocacy work.
At that time, Ben Cohen stated that "Jerry has a really big heart and the ongoing dispute with Unilever was deeply distressing him."
"My heart leads me to continue to work within the organization to advocate for its independence so that it can actualise its ethical purpose, the values which it was founded on while upholding for over 40 years," he explained to media outlets.
