Much like the recent storm swept through the northern region the previous evening, the home side swept Manchester United aside at the Etihad. It was a statement three goal win for their manager's side due to goals from Knaak, Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a result that firmly established their leadership claims as they consolidated their place at the top of the table.

Successive Setbacks for Manchester United

This outcome signalled successive Women's Super League defeats for Marc Skinner’s side for the maiden instance since spring 2024, leaving them a significant margin off the table toppers with their championship aspirations hanging by a thread.

The Red Devils' capacity to manage domestic and continental soccer with a thin roster has been a frequently analyzed topic since they qualified for the UCL. Considering the fixture list, it always seemed this was the matchday that would truly test this ability. Sadly for the away side, they seemed fatigued from start to finish, the memorable win against Paris Saint-Germain clearly having left its mark.

Team Changes

Marc Skinner had attempted to freshen things up with a a few adjustments. Toone, Terland, Dominique Janssen and Leah Galton all brought energy, although the exclusion of the high-performing Malard to the sidelines caused surprise.

The hosts, in comparison, have no similar workload issues. Jeglertz made one adjustment from their most recent win over the Toffees with Lauren Hemp making her return to the lineup since healing from a physical setback.

Overpowering Start

The Red Devils had several attacks ahead, their direct style giving them choices in the wide areas but they could not challenge Yamashita. City, on the other hand, commanded the ball, probing their rivals and trying to lure them of their structure.

Scoring Spree

They turned chances into goals with almost half an hour played when Aoba Fujino won the home team a set-piece. A delivery to the back post was headed across goal by Shaw for Knaak to nod home. It was City’s seventh headed goal of the season.

They increased their lead with two more goals just before the interval. When Jade Rose was permitted to advance through the center from the back, the play widened for City. The influential Casparij picked the ball up on the wing before providing a precise driven ball for Shaw to force home. Four minutes later, they had a third goal after a rapid turnover in the ball saw Lauren Hemp given the space to fire a shot home from range.

Second Half

The most obvious substitution came from the United manager at the interval as Melvine Malard came on for Terland but by this time it was too late to change the course of the game. Former City player Jess Park came nearest, rattling the post, but the visitors were lacking in ideas and did not manage to produce a solitary shot on goal.

The home side, on the other hand, could have increased their lead when a excellent Miedema through ball sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to fluff her lines but it did not affect the result to the winning team. Previously unable to overcome any opponent who placed above them last season, City's side now have victories against the Gunners and Manchester United to place them in a favorable position after the opening fixtures.
