The Australian Team Stays Tight-Lipped on Second Ashes Test XI, Door Wide Ajar for Cummins’ Comeback
The starting XI for the second Ashes Test remains unknown just hours before the match start in the Gabba, with a further inspection of the playing surface required before the team management finalize a squad that could still include Pat Cummins.
Stand-in Skipper Smith Leaves Door Open for Shock Recall
Stand-in captain Steve Smith addressed an journalists on Wednesday but was not disclosing the final selection of the lineup. Yet, he did not rule out a surprise recall for Cummins, who was ruled out of the series opener due to a back issue.
“He has appeared very sharp to me, the way he’s bowled in the nets,” Smith said. “Naturally match intensity differs, but he’s progressing very well, he understands his fitness.”
Late Inclusion Still a Live Option
The pace spearhead was not initially selected in Australia’s larger group for the second match, but still travelled to the Gabba to continue his recovery with the group. Smith confirmed he was progressing well and might still be included at the last minute.
“It's a waiting game but as stated, he’s close,” Smith continued. “He has completed his work the recent period and we’ll see later today when we assess that surface whether he’s in contention or not.”
Team Conundrums Loom if He Plays
A recall for Cummins, which appeared unlikely just a short time back, would lead to recent Test player Brendan Doggett or even experienced spinner Nathan Lyon missing out.
Smith did not assure Lyon’s place in the team when pressed about the spinner's selection.
“Uncertain,” he responded. “We need to examine the surface as I said and make a decision from there. This is a ground Nathan has done really well in the previous matches, he’s a quality bowler. We will consider the options and see how we go.”
Batters Awaiting Recall
Josh Inglis will also have to find out whether he has been selected. The batter is the leading candidate to enter the lineup in place of the unfit Usman Khawaja, with the left-hander expected to open the batting again after his brilliant performance in Perth.
“Many options are on the table,” Smith said. “It's a matter of waiting what the pitch is like and from there we’ll determine a final team.”
“[Inglis] is obviously a positive batsman,” Smith said. “Performed excellently on his debut in Sri Lanka, he’s been in really good form... He handles pace very well. So if he is selected I’m sure he’ll excel for us.”
Final Decision Pending
In addition to Inglis, the all-rounder is under consideration to be selected at No 6, on the assumption that Head partners as opener alongside the other opener, and Cam Green moves up to number five.
Smith said a official announcement on the XI could be made before the day ends, but alternatively, it may wait until the day of the match. The match begins at the Gabba at 2pm local time (3pm AEDT) on tomorrow.
