That Gory Cartoon Film Ending That Haunts Fans
Out of every adult-oriented cartoon movies I’ve ever watched, nothing has lingered in my mind as much as the terror-laced conclusion of the viscerally violent as well as deeply subversive 2022 movie Unicorn Wars.
In 2015’s, this Spanish writer-director created a grim, bleak , often savage universe with some tiny , forlorn twinges of optimism.
While The Unicorn Wars appears as it originated from a desire to advance animation even more, the filmmaker clarified that it was rather an effort to communicate a universal, multicultural theme about “the common origin of all wars.”
This theme is expressed by means of a squad of colorful pastel bears , obviously inspired by a well-known line of cuddly figures.
Being raised in a culture centered on aggression as well as the war machine, numerous the bears are consumed by slaughtering the mythical beasts, because of a holy book that claims the bears they used to be rulers of the forest, until these creatures forced them out.
A few have not completely bought into the indoctrination, and prefer to sample substances or mate in the forest.
Unlike their friendly equivalents, these colorful critters display genitals , definite libidos.
For a particular particularly cruel, pessimistic creature, Bluey, the battle against the unicorns becomes a path toward dominance — and specifically to dominance above his more tender, nicer brother Tubby.
Bluey behaves aggressively , an apparent antisocial figure , and while fear takes over his group and takes his teammates sequentially, he takes more and more power on his own behalf, through ever more bloody, destructive ways.
Meanwhile, the horned creatures are suffering their own terror, as a spreading, destructive monster in their woods.
“In the early stages, it appears as a lighthearted film,” the director commented. “Yet it evolves into a more dramatic and sad movie. And ultimately, it becomes a terrifying movie.”
The Unicorn Wars begins feeling a bit like one of the most quirky films from a renowned animator, that uncover a mischievous joy in permitting animated figures curse, engage in violence, or have intimate relations.
Subsequently it turns into more akin to a more grim movie from that artist, including ever more graphic violence and a noticeable connection to genuine suffering of conflict.
By the end, it’s a complete Grand Guignol massacre.
The terror which makes this an ideal spooky-season movie starts well before than that description suggests.
Unicorn Wars is one for the devoted lovers of violence, for fans of intense movies who desire to view a movie they’ve never watched previously, and who can handle a story that offers no restraint.
View it in a dark room free from interruptions, and that ending will crawl under your skin and take up residence there.
