Rory McIlroy hails Sports Personality success with individual and team accolades.
Moments before his name was called, a trepidatious idea darted through his mind. He admitted he was thinking, "Please don't let it be a Formula 1 star again."
"It's been a fantastic night for golf," McIlroy declared. "Our game was celebrated in such a significant way, with the team winning and then with my award. It's a huge moment for golf, and with any luck we can capitalize on that."
This time around, however, there was no late twist. The outcome was uncontested, allowing a thrilled McIlroy to reflect on a memorable evening for both himself and the team winners, who were named the year's best team.
A Whirlwind Schedule
Choosing not to stay for the aftershow party, McIlroy was already plotting his next sporting adventure. Having just played in a tournament in Florida and jetted to the UK, he was flying right back to the sunshine state.
"The last 24 hours have been a hectic 24 hours," he said. "My plan is for a little bit of downtime over Christmas."
Drive to Improve
However, McIlroy made clear he has no desire to become complacent, despite achieving the ultimate golfing achievement earlier in the year. "I am confident I've got a several strong seasons in me," he remarked.
"Further big titles, season-long rankings, team competitions, that's the aim. But if you feel like you can keep getting better and have the drive, that's the essential part."
Collective Honor
Meanwhile, Ryder Cup partner Tommy Fleetwood, who was on stage to collect the team award, also praised golf's exceptional night and his close friend's award.
"These become the times that will stay with us indefinitely so to get the public's recognition for that is really cool," he stated. "And to be there Rory pick that up, I think he is so worthy so much."
Upon hearing that McIlroy was only the third in his sport to win the award in its seven-decade run, Fleetwood chuckled before quipping, "We're not the most popular are we!"
Looking Ahead
His goal is to finally win his initial major championship next year but he acknowledged McIlroy still desires more success. "If you want to be the greatest possible version of yourself, and you're still inspired, you'll find things to enhance," he noted.
Football Loyalty
Prior to his departure, one final question arose. Being a massive Manchester United fan, he has been asked to parade his trophies at Old Trafford before. Would he be convinced to do it again after his new triumphs?
"Provided that they quit letting in four goals at home," he replied with a grin. "They're getting better. There's a little bit of optimism around."
After a remarkable year, it's understandable that Rory McIlroy is looking on the bright side.
