My feeling was I got a touch - Carey on overturned decision.

Australia wicketkeeper Alex Carey stated he thought he had nicked the ball when he was reprieved on Decision Review System on day one of the third Ashes series Test against England.

After surviving on 72, Carey proceeded to score a superb 106 to help the hosts post 326-8 at the stumps in Adelaide.

What happened?

Australia were 245 for 6 when Carey looked to play a cut shot to the bowling of Josh Tongue.

England appealed confidently, believing they had heard an edge, but on-field official Ahsan Raza remained unconvinced.

Following captain Ben Stokes challenged the on-field call, the footage reviewed by third umpire Chris Gaffaney showed a significant spike although this appeared prior to the ball had passed the bat.

Gaffaney further stated he was of the opinion there was a clearance between the bat and the ball.

Consequently, Carey was reprieved.

"I thought there was a feather or some sort of noise when it passed the bat," commented Carey.

"Had I been given out, I likely would have reviewed, but without much conviction. It was a nice sound as it passed the bat."

Ongoing Scrutiny

Questions have been raised about 'the Snickometer' throughout the series after a series of unclear calls.

England's bowling coach David Saker hinted England may take this most recent incident to a higher level with the match official Jeff Crowe.

"I don't think we've done anything about it so far but after today, maybe that might go a bit further," Saker said.

"There have been concerns about it for the whole series. The focus should be on cricket, not technology failures. That's where we are."

Personal Milestone

The ton was his maiden in Ashes cricket.

It was also an emotional moment for Carey, whose father passed away in September. His spouse was crying in the crowd as the batter celebrated by looking to the skies.

"To make a hundred here in front of home fans and family was special," said Carey.

"You can probably understand my glance skyward. I'm fighting back the tears. But, no, it was great."

History of Controversy

Carey has been at the centre of Ashes debate before.

He was the keeper who notoriously stumped Jonny Bairstow at Lord's Cricket Ground in the 2023 series, leading to a febrile final day.

Speaking about his survival he added: "Snicko obviously didn't line up. That's cricket - you get the rub of the green sometimes."

"Maybe it went my way."
