Liverpool's Captain Admits Team Faces Crisis, Challenges Teammates on Accountability
Virgil van Dijk has delivered a blunt evaluation of Liverpool's woeful championship campaign, admitting the reigning champions are in a mess and failing manager Arne Slot while questioning whether all squad members is owning up for the team’s slump.
Van Dijk struggled to hold back his frustration after Saturday’s 3-0 home defeat by Nottingham Forest, a result that left Liverpool in the bottom half of the Premier League table with a negative goal difference. Tom Werner was present at Anfield to observe Liverpool’s sixth defeat in recent outings, their eighth loss in eleven fixtures across all competitions, and a display that fell apart against a opponent that began the match in the relegation zone.
“Unacceptable” Start and Set-Piece Woes
The captain labeled Liverpool’s opening after halftime as “unacceptable” and admitted “anxiety set in” as soon as Murillo gave Sean Dyche’s team the advantage. Forest’s opener was the ninth concession Liverpool have conceded from a set piece in the Premier League this season.
“We had a great three or four days’ preparation but in a fixture you are facing facts and the truth is we gave away a free-kick in the first half and a terrible goal at the start of the second half,” stated the defender. “We are certainly letting him down, but we’ve disappointed ourselves as well. Start with self-reflection and then you help each other, you work together to escape of this crisis because at the moment it is a mess – that's the reality.
Captain’s Challenge: Take Responsibility
Van Dijk usually speaks the media after a game as part of his role as Liverpool captain. Saturday was different, however. His voice was more forceful – so loud that any teammate in the Anfield tunnel could hear him – and he expressed visible fury while challenging the squad to react. “Anger is justified,” he emphasized. “The main thing for me is that everyone has to take responsibility.” Asked whether that is happening, he answered: “It's unclear. But you have to do that. It’s the main thing I want the players to do. It’s not easy during tough periods but we have to do it if we aim to recover of this.”
Summer Signings and Team Problems
Liverpool spent almost £450m to replenish a title-winning squad in the off-season but have gone backwards, with several high-profile signings failing to make an impact so far. The captain maintained that Liverpool’s issues extend past the new recruits. “It’s tough for all involved,” he said. “My expectation is for everyone to be answerable on the field. This is necessary in order to push each other, to improve collectively. When someone is pressing, you have to follow the press. These are fundamentals but it’s not happening enough.”
Appeal to Stick Together
Van Dijk added: “In the current term we don’t have any steady form, we allow far too many goals, we are losing battles and everyone is responsible for it and I trust this is recognized. It's vital to take responsibility to turn this around and it is easy to point fingers but you have to do it together. We have been through it together and won the league and all contributed, and during a challenging phase you must remain united and not point fingers.
“You have to be a man and confront the hardship and go again, repeatedly because surrendering is not an option then you are in the wrong environment in my eyes, because this club has been going through many adversity over recent seasons and we’ve always come out of it. But it doesn’t mean it is easy, it’s exhausting but there is only one path forward.”
Looking Ahead
The upcoming match in the domestic league is a trip to West Ham next Sunday, after the midweek visit of the Dutch side in the Champions League. Van Dijk said: “Wednesday is another game so how should I respond, go home and cry? No, I'll return and try to think how we can turn this around and hopefully that is what everyone is doing as well.”
