In a decisive second-round vote, far-right candidate José Antonio Kast has won the top job in Chile.

A Commanding Triumph

With more than 99% of polling stations reporting, Kast secured 58.17% of the vote, defeating leftist contender Jeannette Jara, who received 41.83%.

This marks Kast's third presidency, having earlier been defeated by the incumbent president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 final vote.

Platform Built On Law and Order and Immigration

Known for his staunch Catholic views and admiration for the era of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's campaign was mostly focused on promises to address growing crime and significantly restrict immigration.

He frequently cited migrants, particularly the approximately 330,000 illegal individuals in Chile, for crime rates. Throughout the election cycle, he issued an final demand for them to exit before the March 11 handover or face expulsion.

His policy ideas included controversial measures such as constructing camps, barriers, perimeter fencing, and bolstering the military presence on the northern frontier.

Within a Continental Shift

Many commentators view Kast's success as aligning with a larger rightward wave in the region, coming after recent political wins in countries like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.

Nevertheless, other analysts further view it as a part of the predictable alternation of power between left-wing and right-wing administrations since Chile's transition to democracy in 1990.

Leading Lacking a Strong Majority

In spite of his sweeping popular vote victory, Kast is not expected to hold an absolute majority in Congress, not in the lower house nor the Senate, even when various right-leaning parties are grouped together.

This political landscape may complicate his plans, including a promise to reduce public spending by $6 billion within a year and a half—a proposal for which he has yet to offered concrete steps.

"We have many questions about what a Kast presidency will be that remain unclear because he has not detailed his methods for achieve them," said a political science expert.

The expert stated, "Regarding the economy, it is almost certain we will see adjustment measures common for the right. But where there is considerably less uncertainty is on security policy, because that has been his flagship issue across the campaign."
