Democrats Denounce Trump After He Claims They Should Face Death Penalty

Lawmakers from the Democratic party demonstrated anger after former President Donald Trump accused a group of Democratic legislators of being "turncoats" and stated they should be taken into custody and punished "through capital punishment" following their posting of a controversial video.

The Recording That Triggered the Dispute

The video footage, released on Tuesday, showcases six Democratic congress members who formerly acted in defense or security roles.

"Like us, you all made an vow to protect and defend this national charter," the representatives affirmed in the short video. "And right now, the threats to our democratic foundation are not only from foreign nations, but from domestically. Our laws are clear, you can decline illegal orders, you can refuse illegal orders, you should reject unlawful commands. No one has to follow commands that break the statutes or our founding principles."

The Former President's Incensed Response

The recorded statement appeared to trigger a furious reply from the previous commander-in-chief.

On Thursday morning, Trump wrote on Truth Social: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In an additional publication, he stated: "This represents really bad, and Risky to our United States. Their statements cannot be allowed to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a subsequent message, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also reposted a comment that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Democratic Representatives React

Following Trump's comments on Thursday, House Democratic leader issued a unified declaration denouncing the remarks.

"Political violence has no role in this nation," they declared. "Representatives who appeared in the video all acted our nation with tremendous patriotism and excellence. We unequivocally condemn Donald Trump's offensive and harmful calls for execution against elected officials, and call on Republican lawmakers to vigorously do the same."

The opposition officials also said that they had been in contact with protective services "to ensure the security of these officials and their families."

"Donald Trump must without delay take down these radical social media posts and retract his dangerous discourse before he causes harm," the declaration continued.

Representatives' Strong Response

The representatives who were featured in the video also published a statement.

"We identify as veterans and defense specialists who love this nation and made an pledge to defend and defend the founding document of the United States," they stated. "Our pledge is permanent, and we aim to maintain it. No threat, pressure, or promotion of aggression will prevent us from that fundamental responsibility."

"What's most telling is that the ex-president considers it punishable by death for us to restate the law," they continued. "Armed forces members should know that we have their support as they execute their vow to the founding principles and obligation to follow only lawful orders. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our responsibility."

They continued: "The entire nation must unite and denounce the ex-president's requests for our death and political violence. This is a moment for moral clarity."

Further Partisan Reactions

The Democratic Senate minority leader also denounced Trump's statements and shared on online networks: "We must be absolutely clear: the President of the United States is calling for the death of government members."

He continued: "This is an outright THREAT. All senators, all representatives, all citizens – without partisan consideration – should censure this immediately and without qualification."

The Republican House speaker defended Trump's assertion that the Democrats had been involved in "treason", describing the video as "wildly inappropriate", adding: "This constitutes very harmful, you have important representatives of Congress advising troops to disobey orders, I think that represents unprecedented in US history."

The Conservative representative also according to sources informed the press that in what he examined of Trump's publications, Trump was "describing the offense of treason" but that "legal experts have to examine the language and establish all that."

Executive Branch Response

During a executive branch meeting on Thursday afternoon, when asked by a journalist, "Does the president want to execute members of Congress?", the White House press secretary replied: "Absolutely not."

"Let's be clear about what the former president is reacting to," the official said. "You have active officials of the federal government who worked together to organize a digital communication to members of the American armed forces, to active duty service members encouraging them to defy the executive's legal commands."

She said: "The purity of our military rests on the chain of command, and if that system is broken, it can lead to fatalities, it can lead to confusion, and that is exactly what these members of Congress ... are essentially promoting."
