British Designer Antony Price, Famed for Creating Looks for David Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the visionary UK-based designer responsible for some of the most iconic looks favored by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.
He was celebrated for his defined forms and dramatic aesthetics, including the light-hued ensembles that appeared in the iconic band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "their hit Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."
Price's death comes less than a month after he unveiled his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen showcased a dress that paid homage to the famous black velvet "dress" once worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A Lasting Legacy
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price moved to London at the start of the 1960s to enroll at the renowned Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he began designing menswear at the label Stirling Copper and was the creator of the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger sported during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show was launched by creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the marriage dress Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A key creative partner of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the distinctive jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to merge menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping sculptural silhouettes made him a "true original," in the words of the UK's fashion authority.
In the 1990s, he began working on pieces for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, which included various looks for her American tour after becoming Duchess.
After a career spanning half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in partnership with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
- Sculpted Silhouettes: A hallmark of his work.
- Dramatic Impact: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
- Gender-Fluid Fashion: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
- Clients from Stage to Palace: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.
Design circles mourns the loss to a authentic original whose impact on fashion and music remains indelibly etched.
