Roughly fifty automobiles have been smeared with what appears to be blood from a person in the Germany's municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to law enforcement.
Cars, building surfaces and postal boxes were marked, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they reported in a statement.
Police report they were notified during the night on Wednesday evening, when a individual noticed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish substance.
The fluid had been drawn in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they added.
Law enforcement then discovered multiple other marked automobiles and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under regulations outlawing the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Officials report preliminary tests suggest the substance was likely blood from a person.
"At present there remains no lead as to its source; authorities are not yet cognizant of any harm in association with the incident," they commented.
Municipal representatives said they were trying "to solve the incident" and have asked to the residents for information.
An important political figure commented the attack rendered him speechless and had to be addressed quickly.
"This event affects the core of Hanau and revives the trauma of the extremist violent incident in 2020," he wrote on online, mentioning the death of nine people by a gunman aiming at residents of migrant background in February 2020.
